an interesting account of this peal appears in RW 26th july-
" The tourists arrived at the church at three O'clock and were met by the head ringer with "Right away " and the bells were raised, the ringers were instructed not to take any notice of anyone going up and down the staircase as the place was open for any visitor to ascend to the top of the tower to get a view of the distant scenery. however someone during the peal got into the clock chamber and interfered with the ropes several tried the belfry door and called to the ringers but still the changes rolled up in regular sequence until the "conductor called "That's all". Tenterden bells form the heaviest octave in the country and few peals of Major have been rung upon them since Philip Hodgkin first turned the tenor in single handed in 1912. on the present occasion the band realised that the honours of the afternoon were due to the excellent compass of the three Back enders through out the peal"
