Diary preferences

Various aspects of the diary and event notifications system may be customised using the settings on your account page.

General settings

By default, you will receive email notifications for updates to your subscribed events. This can be disabled e.g. if you prefer to only receive these updates via an RSS feed.

Under the default settings, you will also receive a notification when any event within one of your saved searches is cancelled. These notifications will respect the individual notification settings for the saved search which the event is covered by. Turning off these notifications will not affect the notifications you receive for events your are subscribed to.

The personalise diary option will automatically filter the events which are visible to you in the BellBoard diary and homepage based on your subscribed events and saved diary searches. See this page for more information.

iCalendar settings

Calendar applications tend to have a limited amount of space for showing event titles. As such, the name of the district/association/group affiliated with events is suppressed by default in iCalendar feeds. This can be reversed to display event titles in the same way which they appear in the BellBoard diary.

RSS feed settings

RSS feed items contain a published date/time element (pubDate) which is intended to specify when the feed item was first made available. Many RSS aggregators use this field to order the items in the RSS field.

By default, we use this field to indicate when the last notifiable change to an event occurred. For example, for event subscription feeds, the published date/time is updated whenever the event is changed, whereas in saved diary search feeds, it is instead updated only if the event status changes (i.e. if the event is cancelled) and you have the "Receive notifications for cancelled events" option ticked in your preferences. In most RSS aggregators, this has the effect of moving the event to the top of your RSS feed whenever a notifiable change occurs.

You may change this such that the items in the RSS feed are instead ordered in chronological order by changing the Time to use for events in RSS feeds drop-down to Scheduled start time. In many aggregators, this will make your feed display in a more diary-like format. Please note that if your RSS aggregator strictly follows the RSS specification it might automatically hide events which are scheduled to occur in the future, however this behaviour is rare.

In either case, the date and time that an event was last updated is always provided using an atom extension to the RSS specification under the atom:updated item element.
